Birthdays!

The tradition is that in our house when it's your birthday you get to pick where you want to eat.  This year we asked Sutton and his immediate response, "Three Samurai."  We tried to bribe him with Mc Donalds and Chuck E Cheese, but NOPE he wasn't having it.  So off to his fave restaurant we went (and we weren't too sad since it is the fave of all of us in the family!)

He got the special treatment when the chef brought out a special bandana for him to wear while he helped cook the dinner.  He thought he was hot stuff.

Here's a pic of Sutton's and my birthday cake.  Best part of sharing a birthday is I always know I am going to get cake...cause I will buy it for him (and me too, ha ha).

The Party
His party was a blast as usual, lots of friends and family joined us.  He had a dinosaur theme this year.  He is our first kid obsessed with dinosaurs so this has been a nice change from John Deere, construction, and tractors.

And of course he got spoiled with presents.  Happy Birthday buddy!

Giving up the paci

The very last time Sutton had his paci... sniff, sniff.

The baby turned 3... and had to give up the paci.  He did it... wasn't pretty...wasn't easy...glad we never have to do that again.  As with all else that is Sutton he put up a fight when we took it away.  We talked about it for months and months and he was ready to give it to the baby down the street.  I figured this would be cake, Easton did it with no problem so this should be just as easy.  WRONG.

Basically for the first week he got up each night every 1.5 to 2 hours... yep it was like having a newborn again.  But we stood our ground, let him cry and whine, etc...  This went on for another week, and finally by the 3rd week I was D.O.N.E.  Now Jake and I are almost always on the same parenting page, we rarely disagree on what should be done or if we do then usually one of us feels very strongly about the particular situation and the other defers and that seems to work out well...not so much this time.

I wanted to give it back after 2 weeks of him getting up because I was primarily the one putting him back in bed, laying down with him until he fell back asleep, sleep walking down to my own bed only to be woken up again an hour later.  I had hit my point and finally thought maybe we had made the wrong decision.  With Easton he only had it at night for 6 months before he gave it up. Sutton on the other hand was OBSESSED and still had it much of the time.  Then I tried to justify it by saying each child is different and we can't expect the same result from a different kid even with the same method.

Jake was adamant that we took it and we couldn't give it back because it would just teach him that if he cries enough he can have what he wants.  And then Jake sent me all these articles about how the age of 3 is really when you should take it away for dental reasons, and if you take it away you shouldn't give it back... yadda yadda yadda.  He told me if I could find articles to support giving it back he would go along with it.  (yes this is apparently how 2 overeducated people argue... find proof and see whose is better).  I did find a few articles that said it wouldn't hurt his teeth until he was 4, and that sometimes kids need a comfort item.  Jake finally deferred and said fine I am not fighting both of you so just give it back.  YES, I won, I won... but wait.  It didn't feel like a win, it felt more like we were making things worse.

So I called a child psychologist.  He said, "your husband is right, once you take it away you can't give it back."  DANG.  But he said that we went about it all wrong, if he was that obsessed that cold turky wasn't a great idea, and giving it to a baby so close in proximity also not a good idea.  (Sutton had been found wandering around inside our neighbors house claiming "he was looking for something" but would never say what).  He eventually got over it, but not before we had to turn his door knob around to make him stay in his room all night.  That only lasted 3 nights before he decided he would stay in there with the door open.  Ahhh sweet success... but bye bye baby. :(

Showing off the animals

Easton and Sutton go to a phenomenal in home daycare on a farm in North Liberty. Last year the director decided to take in an orphan lamb and have the kids help bottle feed it. Because last year went so well she decided to expand the operation and this year the kids have helped raise: a lamb, a goat, some pigs, 2 calves, ducks, chicks, and rabbits. The names of the animals all came from the kids.  They did a little farm day at the fair grounds where each of the kids stood by an animal and told everyone about them and showed them how they took care of them. Here is a few pics from the farm day:

The calf: Sally
The goat: Taz
The Lamb: Annie

The Ducks: Sunshine and Thomas

The pigs:  Ollie and Erica

Baby boy is 3!!!

Happy Birthday to our Sutton Button (who if you call that will tell you, "no.. just Sutton.") He continues to give us a run for our money and is spunky and stubborn and sweet all rolled into one. The big milestone with birthday #3 is he has to give up his paci the same way Easton did...cold turkey. So we will be heading to Ben and Robyn's tonight to give our paci to baby Asher who needs it way more than Sutton. Happy birthday to me too...giving up my birthday for my baby boy was actually worth it (most days.)

Is the Easter bunny real?

First time I have gotten that question, wasn't quite sure how to answer.  Jake is very good about not "lying" to the kids.  I on the other hand am not so good about it, and sometimes when they ask questions I just give them an easy answer even if it isn't quite true.  So when Easton asked this the other day I had a hard time figuring out if I should lie or tell the truth (and Jake wasn't there, and no we didn't tell them about Santa...yet).  So I said, "uh, hmmm... well.... uh, let's ask daddy cause I'm not sure."  Then Mason replied, "of course he's real who do you think fills up our Easter baskets?"  And Easton said, "oh yah."  And I left it alone... phew saved by the 6 year old who really does believe it.

Our tradition of coloring Easter eggs continues, and of course Chase joined us again this year!
Then the bunny left a few goodies on Easter morning in their baskets. Wasn't alot in the baskets because they had 2 egg hunts (one of which was put on by my mom and her sister and I knew they would go NUTS... I was right) PLUS they got baskets from grandma (who is much more generous than our bunny). So thankfully I went light on stuff. Mason did say later to me, "I thought the Easter bunny hid eggs with stuff in your house for you to find." uh... I will try to remember that for next year... my Easter bunny as a child never did these new modern things that I remain oblivious to.

We had a great time hunting eggs outside in the nearly 70 degree weather!
Isabelle and Christian joined in the fun. Nothing says I am 6 like making silly faces... he will be embarassed by this someday.

A rare pic of Grandma Rene and Grandpa Dean and boys.

And a pic with Papa John and Grandma Lana too!

Zoo

After we got our pictures taken I promised a trip to the zoo if they were good.  They were as good as you can expect 3 boys their age to be!  So off we went to the zoo... me, the boys, and Grandma Karen joined us.

The Des Moines zoo is the perfect size, just enough cool animals but not so huge you get tired and bored.  We saw a ton of animals there: lions, tigers, fish, birds, sea lions, penuins, otters, prairie dogs, goats, and more (although a lot were not out yet).  We fed the ducks, touched fish, and climbed on some dinosaur bones.  We took a ton of pics of the animals to show daddy when we got home.  Here are a few of my animals at the zoo.

On the wiggly bridge, Grandma and Easton found a bird.  She lifted him up and he actually touched it!

On the dinosaur bones

All these fish were just hanging out in this little area, kinda grossed me out.  I think because it was still technically winter they were lethargic or something.  The kids HAD to touch them of course.

Professional pics

When Jake and I went to Florida for the Orange Bowl I fell in love with these shirts at Universal Studios in Orlando.  They said thing 1, thing 2, and thing 3.  Jake thought they were cute until he found out they were $20 a piece.  He just couldn't understand why I would pay that much money for 3 t shirts that the boys would be less than thrilled to receive as their "gift from Florida."  (yes we brought them some other junky stuff that broke and got thrown away within a few days...the tshirts remain, ha ha).

I had to have the tshirts because I had a vision of just how cute pics would be in these shirts and I knew just who I could call to capture them.  One of my good high school friends started her own studio in Des Moines (http://www.landryannadesigns.com/) and so I called her and we made the trek for her to capture my "things."  She did a great job and there are too many good pics to post, but here are a few of my faves.

This is so them... so in the moment!
